Hi, I have just returned to this list, but I heard that you are looking at making vector based kml files, for looking at in google earth and google maps. I thought I would mail to show some experimenting that I have been doing. It still needs some work, for example stopping the surveys going faint when zoomed out, and making the added pointers less rubbish.
There is a plan to allow anyone to contribute cave surveys and marker points. Julian is looking into using wikpeida/wikisource/wikicommons as a way people can contribute cave surveys etc. Templates can be made and then requested back. There is also the possibility for there to be multiple ways of viewing the images, such as in more 3D or open source viewers. Be warned that the tiles are created lazily, so if you are the first to view a tile, it may be a little slow to load. Example views are in austria: http://seagrass.goatchurch.org.uk/~mjg/cgi-bin/map.py?lat=47.68584577306058&lng=13.822603225708007&zoom=15&maptype=Cave%20Survey and in china: http://seagrass.goatchurch.org.uk/~mjg/cgi-bin/map.py?lat=29.585848043308427&lng=107.99809455871582&zoom=14&maptype=Cave%20Survey%20Hybrid Hope they are of interest, let me know if anyone is going down similar lines.
