The problem is associated with the 'dig' flag when -filter off.
The following line ran error free until I added the word 'dig'.

The problematic parameter is -filter, but only with some datasets and not
with others, and only in 5.2.11
For example the following line gives an error when filter is off, but not
when filter is on.
