Your problem is probably this video card. Nvidia only provide proprietary drivers so things don't always work right. If you are using the free 'nv' xorg driver then that is 2D only so OpenGL will be emulated in software. It sounds like this is happening, as you say Aven is similarly slow. I don't know why google earth might work better, but that's proprietary too so maybe they have special nvidia magic? See which version of mesa you have installed (various *mesa* packages are normally responsible for the opengl support) and which X driver you are using. noveau is the free 3D nvidia driver. I've never really messed with this so can't be more specific. I've never even tried using loch on this machine which also has an nvidia card because I know it won't work with nv. I will finally (after several years of waiting :-) be getting amchine next week which should be loch-capable. I look forward to giving it a go.
