Windows versions of Therion have had a bug with displaying 'background sketches' in pdf outputs for many versions - fixed in 5.3.11
On reading your post more carefully I see this is a different problem, 'background images' not loading into the drawing editor. I've not seen this before (in Windows). Bruce
