Hey Folks,
This post is slightly off list so please pardon me. I saw the
Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey last Sat. night outside Cincinnati and they frickin
blew my mind. These guys are amazing. Just amazing- I don't know what else
to say. They played the beautiful "vernal equinox" and "thelonious monk is
my grandmother" was way out of control and many other songs which I don't
know were just plain badass. In the second set, per my request, they played
"the slip", which is their tune dedicated to BAM and features similar
directional changes to what BAM does. I spoke with Reed Mathis (bass- but
he plays like I have never seen or heard!) during set break and JFJO and the
Slip are playing together at the end of this month (4/29 and 4/30) at
Harper's Ferry in MA and The Mercury Lounge in NYC respectively. According
to Reed they will take the stage as a 6 piece! This will undoubtedly be
nuts. I can't be there so somebody please please tape this. I haven't seen
such a crazy show as JFJO in some time. Dare I say it...they are better
than the slip? perhaps not, but they are taking music in a similar direction
and think the two must be connected through some planetary alignment and
spinning in the center of the tao together or something else beyond my
comprehension. b/c this post was a little off list and if your still
reading this or haven't heard JFJO I'll offer BnP or Trade for their new
years show (12/31) and/or some "old school" slip 11/21/97.
Thanks.
Be well,
Mac
