I have really been enjoying the Dark Horse series, specifically the Born on
the Battlefield arc by Kurt Busiek.? By all accounts, they are taking special
pains to adhere to the pulpy origins of the character, and the stories have
been powerful and cool.?

I'm with you on Ratner, but what possible exception could you have to someone
using the creator's vision of a character as its basis?

Reading your email closely, I think you're giving too much weight to "thier
take" in the source quote.? Ultimately, any adaptation is going to be the
apdater's take, but it looks like these guys (who I have never heard of) were
at least working with the right back-material.? The thing to worry about is
Ratner fucking with it.

They should do Conan vs. Cthulhu, make a gazillion dollars and retire.

not Ratner??? Maybe next time God.

The trade says that Ratner jived to the Conan script by Joshua
Oppenheimer and Thomas Dean Donnelly, who looked to Robert E. Howard's
original pulp stories of the 1930s to create their take on the
character. from the site.

There is the problem right there. Their take on the character. Bad,
bad idea.
