My guess is that they are just trying to bank on the fact that being a "geek" is cool right now. Look at the major blockbuster movies from this year. We dominated! Look at the TV line up - Two popular shows are "Chuck" and "Big Bang Theory". We control the frequency! Look at the hot X-mas gifts the past few years - gadgets and gizmos. We're a profitable target market!
