I'd never heard of Krampus until a couple years ago, and the dressing up is completely new to me. Cool costumes; the tradition is reminiscent of what a freind told me that some Japanese do with their children- terrify them with elaborate Oni costumes and stories that if they are naughty the Oni will come and eat them.
