Characters don't have to have big existing fan base to make a successful movie;
they just need to be well written and directed with good actors - preferably
pretty ones.

Case in point, a norm girl in my office loved Iron Man - didn't even know he
was a comic book character.

Hancock made over $600M, and he wasn't even a comicbook superhero.  Few people
outside of comicbook devotees knew of Hellboy or The Crow before they became
movies.

Some say they aren't that many 'good' comicbook heroines - which, is valid,
but, fine; instead of the Green Lantern being Hal Jordan, make it Jordan Hal.
This may sound weird, but a lot of characters aren't totally contingent on
their gender.  Sure, Hulk - dude, Batman - dude, Captain America - dude, but
I'm sure there arr lots of male characters that could be 'Starbucked' -
granted, I can't think of any, but I'm sure they exist ;)
