Well, critics are supposed to be biased. It's their job to have an
opinion, which will often be at odds with the general public. I know
several, and they are film geeks who have seen far more cinema (and a
greater variety) than the average person ever will. One of my good
buddies is a film critic, and though we have often disagreed about
movies (He was underwhelmed by "Star Trek;" I loved it.), I have never
doubted his sincerity in forming an opinion about something. Like Cary
said, Roger Ebert, in particular, has praised plenty of big popcorn
movies.
