Interestingly Barnes and Noble just announced an alternative:

Get any ebook and put it on any computer/electronic device you want
using their provided e-reader. They are also claiming more titles
available then Amazon.
Although having to download a special e-reader to read the material
may be just as annoying as getting a Kindle. It may have the same
issues as mentioned in the article. Must read the fine print.
