i can't believe i am actually going to somewhat defend him here...

Lucas has different 'silos' of credibility.

Silo 1= Technical process. I consider this to be the advances he has made
with Industrial Light & Magic,Skywalker Sound, LucasArts, and Lucasfilm Ltd.
These have moved the movie and film industry (and sound and video game
industries too) forward in huge strides. I don't know that he will ever be
able to damage his credibility here. If there were a Mt Rushmore for
creative & technical process he would be on it for sure.

Silo 2= Star Wars. He was the guy behind the Space Opera. I am throwing
writing and producing the SW films in this specialty as this was/is his
biggest recognizable 'baby'. Before Phantom Menace i would say he had the
same status as i gave him with silo 1. Then came the 'tinkering' with the
original trilogy (Greedo shoots first...Fuck you George) and then to really
kick me in the nuts, Phantom Menace. A 2 hour CSPAN episode with less
interest than you would get on the healthcare debate in the House or
Representatives. With respect to silo 2, George has ruined all credibility
for me.

Silo 3= Producer. George was the producer on Willow, Tucker and the Indiana
Jones films. Again with Raiders, Indy 2 and Indy 3 i would have said he
can't go wrong. Then came Crystal Skull. Don't misunderstand me, Georgie
hasn't lit this silo on fire and then tried to douse those flames with
aviation fuel like he has with silo 2, but he is not doing himself any
favors. He has allowed his credibility to slip here and he needs to be aware
of it.

Silo 4= Writer. George's days as a meaningful and compelling story writer
seem to have vanished. He wrote American Graffiti, Raiders of the Lost Ark
(with SS) and of course the original SW trilogy. I suppose just to see if
gold could really melt, he then wrote Captain EO, The new SW trilogy and
Crystal Skull...1850 degrees F George, 1850 F.

Silo 5= Director. Ok from the pieces i have seen about George as a director
he has never been great. American Graffiti and SW did rock, but i think that
they did well because of the material and the actors as much as any
directorial insight or guidance Georgie gave them. He was decent at best
here even in his heyday, but now that Episodes 1-3 came out this silo just
got tossed in with silo 2.

Bottom line, George Lucas USED to be a great Writer and Producer, now he is
decent at best. He was never a great director. However he is a friggin
magician when it comes to the technical process and advances that are needed
and come about for making movies.
