I'm also enjoying Stargate Universe. I'm a few episodes behind, but I really like it. Your analogy about following Star Trek's pattern is dead-on. In fact, during SG1 they made references to Stargate teams in the 1950s. I'm guessing the next show will focus on an Indiana Jones-like Stargate team from the 1950s. ;)
There is definitely a heavy BSG influence on this show. It took three episodes for me to warm up to it, but I got there. Love the characters and the concepts. I look forward to this show every week.

I've never liked the Stargate franchise, though I did find the pilot
episode of Stargate Atlantis to be a step up from what I had seen of
the original SG-1 show. It didn't prove enough to keep me going with
it, but it seemed okay.
But I've been watching the new SG:U show on Hulu and iTunes and I have
to say, it's pretty engrossing.
Obviously they're trying to make it look and feel more like
"Battlestar Galactica" than the previous two series did, what with all
the dark stuff (inlcuding literally very dark sets, as well as
thematic dark stuff) and conspiracies and "moral shades of gray" and
character-driven stories, etc. That's fine.
It also makes me laugh to consider how they're following the exact
same arc as STAR TREK's modern incarnations:
First series: General travel around the galaxy. (ST: TNG and SG:1)
Second series: Everyone's on a big alien base/station. (DS9 and
Atlantis)
Third series: The cast is stuck on a ship lost a gazillion miles from
Earth, trying to get home. (Voyager and Universe)
So will the next Stargate show be a prequel, a la Enterprise?? :-)
