I don't know if it will be iTunes or some other digital distribution,
but yes... the comic industry's life as they know it is nearing an
end.

Sooner or later, digital distribution will become commonplace. Marvel
and DC are holding out on same-date distribution in an effort to
protect local comic shops, but it's only a matter of time. As they
raise prices on hard copy comics, fewer people will buy comics. As
fewer people buy, they'll need to raise the price further. It's a
Catch-22. Sooner or later they are going to cave to digital
distribution because they can sell the comics for less and lure back
old fans, and gain new ones, with lower prices.

While there will still be people who want tangible hard-copy comics,
the local comic book stores won't be around anymore to provide them.
Once digital distribution of comics explodes, local comic shops will
close in droves. If Diamond Comics distributor shuts down, you can
just about guarantee nearly every comic shop will close it's doors
within two or three months.

If you want tangible comics in the future, you'll probably have to buy
trade paperbacks. They'll probably still be available in major
bookstore chains, and specialty comic shops that are smart enough to
diversify their product line.

A somewhat bleak picture, but that's how I see it.
