I browse the Kindle store every couple of weeks; they'll list something relatively new for free on a regular basis. I've picked up a few- His Majesty's Dragon and Magic Kingdom for Sale have been two that I've really enjoyed. Anything in public domain is likely there too; I've downloaded Sherlock Holmes, stories from Mark Twain, books on mythology (King Arthur, Norse gods), and Sun Tzu's Art of War.
