Well, I don't think you have to play strangers just because you're on Battle.net. If you want to play your son you can set that up over Battle.net, I'm fairly sure. I don't do that much multi-player, but I can't imagine they make it impossible to play specific players.
As you say, LAN is being supported less and less, and you should expect that trend to continue. Networks do the same job, and so much more.
