I use thunderbird and I agree with pretty much everything the article says. A standalone email client has worked well for me so far but I'm rethinking that. Since I work from home and have no laptop I'm always on the same machine...at least till I pull the trigger and order the laptop I'm about to buy. I started using thunderbird shortly after switching to Firefox since my ISP's webmail interface is absolutely abysmal. Previous versions of Thunderbird have done well for both email and RSS feeds; this version is not making me happy at all.

Last week before you sent that link I was already checking out switching to Gmail. The biggest issue currently is performance. Whatever they did with this upgrade to Thunderbird has slowed it down to glacial speeds.

I used Thunderbird for a short time; just after I discovered Firefox. It
was replaced by various webmail providers that ultimately led to Gmail,
the hands-down best email service I've used. I tried the OSX mail client
for about five minutes before I gave up on it, and using the various
Windows mail clients were like having all my skin removed with emery
boards. I have to use Outlook for work, but curse it every time I have
to check my mail. Does anyone use a stand-alone email program anymore
outside of business use?
