One factor is the cost of manufacturing. Apple allegedly cornered the market on some tablet components (capacitive touchscreen stuff is what I read) and the scarcity drove up costs. In addition Apple is leveraging their existing manufacturing process; the iPad is a similar device to what they were already making, allowing them to produce higher volumes at lower overall prices (like the car companies do). I've seen the cost of an iPad's manufacture as less than $300. That's a hell of a margin for a cost leader.
