I am going to repost what I posted over the on theTwo True Freaks! board: Ugh.
Ugh ugh ugh. I bought this issue for the Doomsday stuff (which has been excellent), only made it about halfway through the lead before bedtime last night. Looks like I will read the lead story and the next couple of issues to finish out the storyline and just ignore the rest. Ugh. I said on another thread that Superman being the guy who "does the right thing because it is the right thing to do" is seen as antiquated and naive by a lot of people in this country, and character decisions like this are symptomatic of that attitude. This is "edgy" and "modern" and "what real people want to see" (read: what left-leaning writers want to think that people want to see), and it drives me up the walls. It's SUPERMAN for crying out loud. The ultimate immigrant, the ultimate proof that ANYONE can come to America and make something of themself -- and make the world a better place, too. Too often in the last few years creators want to make politicized statements with these characters, to address some "greater truth," or some such nonsense. But this is the worst one. Worse even than the anti-Arizona people who claimed that Superman was an illegal alien and that proponents of the Immigration bill would deport Superman (nevermind the fact that being adopted by American citizens makes Superman a naturalized American, not an alien). It's stupid and inane and a desperate grab for attention. Say what you will about the New Krypton Saga -- and everyone has -- but at the end of the day that story was a grand and epic adventure. Was it the greatest Superman saga ever? No. But was it entertaining and fun and about (*gasp*) superheroic action and adventure? Yes! Good Lord, DC, give us superheroics out of Superman! Not navel gazing, not moping, and not politicized BS! Argh! I am sure this will be eaten up by the Blame America First crowd.
