Saw Super 8 this evening. The first hour and change are marvelous, beautifully introduce characters and a small town. It's a Spielberg-sanctioned Spielberg homage, and it works that way, but I would also compare it to early Ray Bradbury short stories. Sweet nostalgia. There's some exciting tension and an interesting story, and then...it gets boring as all hell and you're sorry they wasted that magical first hour.
I ended up feeling like I did with Abrams' Star Trek. I loved the cast, I thought they were all cool and fun, but then he had to give them something to do, and it was weak. Terrible story in Star Trek, great cast. With Super 8, it's a great cast and half of a good story, and then the air goes out of the balloon. It's weird with this Abrams guy, His sense of atmosphere and history are excellent. His interviews are compelling. His strategies are interesting. He just can't stick the landing. Will Cloverfield end up being his masterpiece? It aint great, but it's...complete. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "The Unique Geek" group.
