I doubt anything would happen if you plugged in a mouse or USB headset or some other USB device that does not require charging. I would think the circuit for the USB would know what to do. It would basically be the same if you were to take, say, an iPod that has the power adapter with the USB plug integrated so that you can either plug in the USB connector into your computer or plug it into the power adapter to be plugged into the wall for charging.
