I watched this twice now and really enjoyed it both times.  The second time I watched it with my dad (a long time Star Trek fan).  I was of the exact same mindset as y'all about Avery Brooks until I watched it the second time.  My dad has been a musician for about 50 years.  A good part of that has been involved with Jazz.  He acknowledged that Avery Brooks was way-out there, but he says he's met true Jazz musicians like this.  He said it's almost like they operate on a different plane of reality and the music speaks through them.

How funny!! I just watched this on streaming also. I couldn't watch the whole thing, it got kind of boring by the end but yes...Avery Brooks was essentially incoherent in that piece. Words come out of his mouth, but they make no sense and they add no substance. If he has always been this way (which i doubt) i can't imagine how he remembered his lines for the show. I suspect that he has some sort of substance abuse issue now, but that is just my uninformed opinion.

I just finished watching The Captains on Netflix streaming, the documentary of all the Star Trek captains by William Shatner, and there is one thing that really stands out after watching this...Avery Brooks is a whack job. Seriously, does anyone know any personal history about this guy? Did he do too much LSD in the 60's or something?
