Hey Race! Glad to see you're back into comics! There is no Excalibur anymore. Sorry. ;)
My recommendations:
1) Fables - You've already heard enough about it. And it's all true. Great comic.
2) The Unwritten - Another Vertigo book. Really fantastic series. It's a story about stories. Can't recommend it enough.
3) If you want superheroes, "Daredevil" is the possibly the best superhero comic on the market right now. The current series (on issue #8 or something right now) is written by Mark Waid. Even if you've never read a Daredevil comic before, this new series is great. Fun, adventurous, smart, and not too dark and edgy.
4) Another great superhero comic right now is "Flash". This surprised everyone. The new series (on issue #6 or #7) has great art, strong storytelling, and is just a darn good read each month.
