On Friday I headed over to the local game shop, Boardwalk, to play some
Magic: The Gathering because one of the owners had mentioned to me that
they were going to be playing some Pauper Magic. Pauper is a format where
the only cards you can use are Commons, no Uncommon or Rare cards allowed.
So I built up a deck, got permission from my wife, and headed over.

Things didn't start well. When I went to check in and get my DCI card, the
guy doing check in said that Pauper was going to be Draft, which means that
everyone ends up buying a certain number of booster packs and "drafting" a
deck that way. To that I said, pffff, no. So I ended up signing up for
Standard, which is the "normal" format (as the name implies) and is
typically played Constructed, which means you build you deck beforehand
like I had done. The problem is that Standard allows any kind of card from
the current sets; playing with my Pauper style deck I knew I would be in
trouble.

Turns out the guy doing check in was wrong; Pauper was Constructed after
all. So bleah on him.

Anyway, I got creamed pretty badly. Went 0-2 in the first round, 0-2 in
the second round, and 1-2 in the third. I honestly believe that I won a
game in the first round but the kid was acting cagey with his life total
D20... I hit him with a big strike after all his blockers were tapped out,
and I am certain I did just enough to kill him, but he claimed he had 1
left. I didn't want to raise a stink since I was the New Guy and he was a
regular.

In any event I did have fun. I think I would have had more fun if I had
the right deck with me. considering going in maybe once a month or so just
to play and justify the money I spend on these cards.

Any other Magic or other CCG players here? Hmmm?
