I'm known in these parts as a big fan of Stieg Larsson and the "Dragon
Tattoo" books and movies. One thing I loved about those stories was the
sort of serene yet somehow creepy snowy Swedish landscape, which is almost
like another character in the stories. I guess I had never consciously
thought of so much of Sweden as being so rural/agricultural, so it was
somewhat jarring to see that a lot of it looks like Alabama-- or southern
Illinois.

Quite by accident I recently recorded some episodes of the series WALLANDER
starring Kenneth Branaugh (director of THOR, etc). (We had the DVR set to
record Masterpiece Mystery, for SHERLOCK.) Looking into it, I discovered
they are detective stories written by another acclaimed Swedish mystery
novelist--one who didn't die after writing a single trilogy-- Henning
Mankell. I also found that Netflix has several episodes of an earlier,
Swedish-produced series (with subtitles). Intrigued by all of this, I went
and picked up the first volume of his Wallander novels, FACELESS KILLERS,
last weekend. So far, it's pretty engrossing.

My question is this: Anyone else here read any of the books or seen any of
the shows? Are the older, subtitled, Swedish shows as good as (or better
than) the newer Branaugh versions? Are any of them any good? Do they all
stink? What else might I need to know?

Thanks--
