The black and white bulk "phonebook" reprints were successful enough for 
Marvel that others have since moved into that market with success, 
including DC, Dark Horse, and Image.  For the price they are hard to beat 
on value.  And certain genres (namely War comics, which DC has really 
supported in the B&W format) look better in B&W than color.
 
I am already invested in the Essentials format and do not see myself 
changing that.  I don't like how they are jumping around, either.  At least 
with the Essentials you know that when the next volume comes out it will be 
the next one in line, not a random one.  
 
But that having been said click on the reviews for any Essentials or 
Showcase Presents volume on Amazon and you will see someone giving it 1 
star because it's not in color.  So clearly there is a market for these 
books.
