Digital projection has eliminated the need for intermissions for longer
movies, unfortunately. Only a few extra-long epics get them nowadays, and
then it is a creative decision moreso than a practical decision.

We are seeing more long movies now, because thanks to the multiplex,
theaters can exhibit longer films without worry about tying up theaters for
3+ hours at a clip. And the marginal cost of making a film longer has
never been cheaper, so it's synergistic.
