SyFy usually... USUALLY... puts money and effort behind their original TV
shows. 12 Monkeys is one of those oddball movies which I think is hard to
adapt to other media... but you make a good point Cary, the themes of the
film are ripe for exploration.
I know I have mentioned this before, but SyFy does not produce, fund, or
otherwise make any creative decisions regarding "SyFy Original Movie"
movies. SyFy buys TV rights to these films on the cheap, knowing that they
pull in good ratings at extremely low cost. 2 hours worth of ratings, at
that. These cheap sources of revenue and programming hours allow SyFy the
opportunity to fund their "SyFy Original Series" shows, like the
just-debuted Rewind, which actually looked pretty neat... need to see if
it's on OnDemand.
The example I always point to is the superlative werewolf movie Dog
Soldiers. It had been released to much acclaim overseas and on DVD here in
the States for some time when SyFy got the TV rights. They promoted and
aired the film as a "SyFy Original Movie," and OH BOY you can imagine the
frothing, insane reaction from its fans.
