Thank you for posting this... I am looking into some sort of a solution for my very old desktop, which I normally mainly use for the Internet and podcasting (which is to say, Audacity and Skype). It works well enough but it's very long in the tooth at this point, and it's going to come down to either putting some more RAM in it (or as I like to say, cash for cache) or replacement.
