Clive Barker to pen ‘Hellraiser’ remake with Doug Bradley as Pinhead Clive Barker, famous for his horror stories and movies, spends much of his time now in his Beverly Hills gallery painting the demonic and fantastic. (Gina Ferazzi/Los Angeles Times) Clive Barker has announced his intention to write a new script for a remake of “Hellraiser,” his 1987 directorial debut. The respected horror author and filmmaker made the announcement about his plans to revisit the S/M-inflected tale in a post on his Facebook page, saying that he not only would pen the new screenplay but that he had secured an agreement from distributor Weinstein Co. for actor Doug Bradley to reprise his role as the signature villain Pinhead. “Today I have officially been invited to write the script…” Barker wrote. “What can I tell you about it? Well, it will not be a film awash with CGI. I remain as passionate about the power of practical make-up effects as I was when I wrote and directed the first HELLRAISER. Of course the best make-up in the world loses force if not inhabited by a first-rate actor. I told the Dimension team that in my opinion there could never be a Pinhead without Doug Bradley, and much to my delight Bob Weinstein agreed.” The feature directorial debut of then up-and-coming writer Barker was a high-concept nightmare, equal parts H.P. Lovecraft, J.G. Ballard and the Marquis de Sade. Barker’s lens never shies from even the most grotesque or paradoxical elements of the story, a tale in which a band of sadistic angels, summoned through an elaborate puzzle box, mete out various torments to their victims. The story was based on Barker’s novella “The Hellbound Heart,” and has spawned numerous sequels. There’s been talk of a remake for years, but Barker’s renewed involvement signals new momentum for the project. Barker is set to appear in person on Saturday to discuss another of his films, “Nightbreed,” at the American Cinematheque’s Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. His 1990 feature will be screened in a new, restored version with more than 40 additional minutes of footage, and Barker, restoration director Russell Cherrington and producer Mark Miller will participate in a Q&A following the screening.
