I had alway chalked up the expansion from two parts to three primarily to New Line wanting to twist the knife on the Weinsteins, who made an incredibly boneheaded deal when they sold the rights to Tolkien's work. Their deal only gives them a cut of the money for the "first film to adapt, in whole or in part" of each book; so they only got a cut from An Unexpected Journey, and will not get a penny from Desolation of Smaug nor There And Back Again. In the interest of full disclosure, I really enjoyed An Unexpected Journey, and am very much looking forward to Desolation of Smaug but have not had a chance to see it yet. The way I approached it was, it's an adaption of the book, and it adds more suff from other sources in there. I mean, I loved The Hobbit when I read it as a young man, and when I re-read it about 10 years ago, but I am approaching these as films and taking them as such. The author of this piece makes some really good points, but I personally would rather celebrate what I am enjoying at this stage of my life. Thanks for posting this, Cary!
