The article makes a false implication, that sales were "tanking" because of
supposed widespread outrage over the iconic Barbie doll proportions. That's
pretty demonstrably untrue, as the main problem facing Barbie and pretty
much all toylines is that kids simply do not play with toys as much as they
used to, girls especially. The culture here in the US has pushed young
girls away from playing with dolls and more into "tween" girl territory
(fashion, cell phones, gadgets, and so forth). Add to this the fact that
newer fashion doll brands such as Monster High (which have insane, Bratz
style proportions) are seen as more "hip" and thus more marketable than
Barbie, which primarily relies on the strength of it historic and iconic
brand. Monster High also has a popular fictional mythology around it,
which Barbie has never had in any sustained way -- she's an Everywoman type
of character, as opposed to the MH girls who have defined personalities
which are consistent across media.

Still, nice to see some innovation from a brand which has prided itself on
granular changes for decades.
