Well, it's one release version. The standard release will still be PG-13.

This is not atypical -- a good example off the top of my head is GI Joe:
Retaliation, which was theatrically released at PG-13, but also had an
"Unrated" extended cut on BRD which would have netted an R due to the extra
bits of combat which were added back in. GI Joe is not a superhero
property, but definitely a comic book property, based on a toy line, even.
Many "extended cuts" or "Director's Cuts" or whatnot are either a grade
higher than the theatrical cut, or Unrated.

Considering that DKR seems to be spiritual if not narrative inspiration for
this film, and considering the level of violence in the fight between
Superman and Batman in that comic, I have no problem with this. Then again,
I have been called (not by you, Shag, or anyone else on this list serv) a
"DC Apologist" several times (which is funny in it's own right), so maybe I
am simply more prone.

And of course, there is the speculation about what exactly merits the R --
the MPAA has pendulous swings in what it over-values and under-values in
coming up with a Restricted rating, with violence lately getting looked at
harder than language or sexual content -- and I highly doubt that Warners
will have any sex or foul language in this movie. Getting an R for
violence in a superhero movie is a fine line since the rub seems to be
"fantasy violence" versus "realistic violence."

Now that I think about it, I think the "extended edition" of the animated
DKR film might be Unrated after both parts were initially PG-13...

And getting back to my GI Joe example, personally I would let my kids watch
Rise Of Cobra (PG-13) with it's cartoonish, sci-fi battles, but I would not
let them watch Retaliation (also PG-13) with it's much more realistic
gunplay and close combat knife fighting...
