Just watched the first episode of Beowulf: Return To The Shieldlands. This series airs on ITV in the UK and on Esquire Channel here in the States. It's sort of Beowulf-meets-Game Of Thrones.
I'm a sucker for the Beowulf story-- see here http://ljaconesbunker.blogspot.com/2008/07/discount-bin-finds-beowulf-dragon.html -- but one episode in this is a pretty big diversion. Beowulf travels to the Mead-Hall of Hrothgar, there's swordplay and a very humanoid monster who may or may not be Grendel, but beyond that it is intrigue, plots, succession, rivalry, etc. So definitely plying on the GOT tropes. I will continue to watch it for now -- for one thing, I don't have HBO and do not watch GOT... for another, like I said, I really like Beowulf -- and see how it goes. Part of me really wishes we could have gotten an honest-to-Wyrd adaption of Beowulf for this show, but that does not seem to be in the cards. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "The Unique Geek" group.
