Hi Jörg (or Joerg? Which spelling do you prefer?)

Sphinx can handle ranges, so the best approach is to make a range that  
essentially represents what you need. For example:

Less than 5: 0..4
More than 5: 6..0xffffffff

In between is much easier, as that's exactly what a range does :)
