Hi Keith,
you might want to apply this patch (
http://github.com/thbar/thinking-sphinx/commit/1fec8f7bb506cd4496c4b0b13fb0ccfa199b1b01)
- it will raise an error if searchd failed to start, indicating the current
path.

That may give you a clue of what's happening.
