It looks I haven't done anything wrong; at least not in my
implementation (though I'm willing to bet there are other issues, but
those can be dealt with as they're found).

After a restart (computer repair 101... should've done that first), it
looks like things have cleared up; I think I may have had colliding
instances of the Sphinx daemon running.
