It looks like you're using Rails 2.1--that could always be an issue. Run the command (from rails root):
search -c config/development.sphinx.conf "06430044" Also look at your Sphinx log after indexing, see if it spits anything out. After this, I'd honestly say to try bumping up to Rails >2.3.2 to test and see if it works. Then you can tell if your Rails version is an issue or not. The thing that I'd say you should look for, is if the names you use are reserved words within Sphinx (I can't seem to find a list--if there are any), Rails / Ruby, etc. I'd also still use the symbol as a good practice within define_index-- also, it might be worth it to specify the type and use ":as => xyz_<col_name>" just to see. Not sure what else good I can do to help you after you try all of those things, without seeing more application meat. But I hope this helps in some way.
