When I store lat, lng in decimal degrees, I use
has 'RADIANS(lat)', :as => :latitude, :type => :float
has 'RADIANS(lng)', :as => :longitude, :type => :float
set_property :latitude_attr => "latitude"
set_property :longitude_attr => "longitude"
