Right, so I think it now works for me. searchd.production.pid had
owner root and permissions rw-------. With ec2onrails the app
processes are run by user 'app'. A change to rw-r--r-- did the trick.

I now get the lovely [Thu Jul 30 13:55:38.676 2009] 0.000 sec [scan/2/
rel 1 (0,20)] [activity_core] output in the query log on record
changes and the search seems to keep track of the changes, as should.

Thanks for the inputs and pointers. Michael - I may be totally off
here but since I had a permissions error on this file perhaps it could
be worthwile to check it for you as well...
