I just had the same error and sphinx and application are on the same machine. Interesting that before today everything worked pretty nice. Unfortunately I couldn't catch what changed. But the problem have gone after I upgraded thinking sphinx from version 1.3.14 installed as a plug-in to version 1.3.15 installed as a gem.
