For what it's worth, I've been playing with this some -- and Sphinx limits the number of queued queries to 32. Which should be enough for everyone, but is not enough for me... so this approach doesn't work in my case, and generally won't for faceting and reporting engines. And yes, I realize that if I want to exceed 32 Sphinx queries at once, I'm doing it wrong.
