I think the odds of it being a firewall issue are small, but it's just odd that searchd is running, and yet we can't talk to it... and really, a firewall should not block traffic from within the server, just from outside getting in.
I guess one other thing to try is 'search', which is the command line tool that comes with Sphinx.
