I know others have got Sphinx to work with UTF (and Chinese) characters, but
I've not done it myself, so not sure how much help I can be.

Firstly - have you got your charset_table set up correctly, indexing all the
relevant UTF characters? Secondly - especially in the case of Chinese - have a
look at the ngram_len and ngram_chars settings:
http://sphinxsearch.com/docs/manual-2.0.1.html#conf-ngram-len

Also, on the topic of Chinese Sphinx support, I've just heard recently of a
Sphinx clone with improved Chinese support, called Coreseek. The latest commits
for Riddle should make it play nicely with Coreseek, though TS may need a patch
or two.

Cheers
