Sorry Michael, I'm really not familiar with any texts that could be a good resource - I know there's books out there about search engines that are very much from a tech perspective, but have not seen anything a bit more high level.
That said, if you're playing with Sphinx at all, or have questions generally, I'll do my best to answer them.
