Thanks Pat. I went through the following steps:
1. check that sphinx was running in production (ps -efa | grep
searchd),
2. stopped thinking sphinx (cap ts:stop, from my local machine),
3. check that sphinx was really stopped in production (ps -efa | grep
searchd, which returned nothing)
4. config, index, and start thinking sphinx (cap ts:config, cap
ts:index, cap ts:start)
5. check that sphinx was restarted (ps -efa | grep searchd, which
returned a new process id)

but still the same problem...
