Unfortunately this is a limitation with the older releases of Sphinx - string sorting (ordinal) values are only calculated within the context of a single index - hence the core and delta indices for the model get different sorting values.
If you upgrade to Sphinx 2.x (and a recent release of Thinking Sphinx, if you've not done so in a good while), this should be fixed, as string attributes are sortable without any need for the ordinal values.
