I've had some experience with this, as I'm providing hosted Sphinx instances
via Flying Sphinx. Firstly, you'll want to make sure every client gets Sphinx
on a unique port. And yes, authentication would be ideal - and so I patched
Sphinx to provide this, via the searchd setting client_key.
searchd
{
# …
client_key = secret_auth_key_value
}
Both Riddle and Thinking Sphinx allow for the use of this setting too. Check
out the flying-sphinx source:
https://github.com/flying-sphinx/flying-sphinx/blob/master/lib/flying_sphinx/railtie.rb#L12
And my fork of Sphinx with the patch applied against various versions (though
not 2.0.5 yet) can be found here - see different branches for different
versions:
https://github.com/freelancing-god/sphinx/tree/client_key
All that said - if you would rather let me handle Sphinx hosting, we could
possibly sort something out for your clients to use Flying Sphinx. Perhaps best
to discuss that off-list if you're interested. If not, no worries :)
