If you just want to run indexing at a regular interval, perhaps you don't need 
deltas at all? But if your overall indexing is slow, you can use the default 
deltas, and then just add the following to an initialiser: 
ThinkingSphinx::Deltas.suspend!

Then, you'll want to write a rake task that runs your delta indexing:

  ThinkingSphinx::Configuration.instance.controller.index 'user_delta', 
'article_delta', …

Then you can run this rake task more regularly (but you'll still need to run a 
full index too, just not as often).
