As far as I know, such an approach isn’t possible with Sphinx - each word gets 
fed through the indexing process separately. If index size/search speed is a 
concern, you can apply prefixing to certain indices or fields, but customising 
length on a per-field basis is not possible.

If you only want indexing enabled for specific indices, put something like the 
following within the index definition block:

  set_property :min_prefix_len => 3

If you only want certain fields, then *add* the following option to the fields 
within an index definition block (min_prefix_len is required either in the 
definition or in config/thinking_sphinx.yml):

  indexes name, :prefixes => true

But yeah, to come back to the question you actually asked: pretty sure it’s not 
possible, though people on the Sphinx forum could certainly know tricks I don’t
